A 7m diameter revolving stage from British Turntable is helping to create a dramatic focal point in the new 'Milestones of Flight' gallery at the renowned RAF Museum in Hendon, UK. The revolve is being used to highlight a beautifully polished World War II P51D Mustang fighter aircraft to create instant visitor appeal. By supporting the plane on axle stands fitted to the turntable deck, the museum has fashioned a dynamic display for one of the first exhibits to hit the eye when viewing the exhibition from the balcony, the visitor's first port of call. The plane literally sparkles under the lights as it revolves on the turntable British Turntable supplied ready for the exhibition's Royal opening in December 2003. Donated by wealthy American, Bob Tullius, the World War II aircraft is an excellent example of the close co-operation that existed between the USA, who produced one of the best fighter airframes in the world, and the UK, who matched it to the superb British Merlin aero-engine. Richard Tweed, head of design and display at the museum is delighted with the effect. "Having such a magnificent aeroplane revolving in this way really makes best use of the lighting; the reflections that the movement creates really catch the eye." The revolving stage is from British Turntable's standard design. At 7m in diameter it is capable of carrying an evenly distributed load of 4000kg and has a nominal height of 280mm at the edge. A variable speed DC controller allows the turntable speed to be set between 0.2 and 1.1rpm with both clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation possible. This ensures an optimum viewing speed that will both attract visitors to the exhibit and allow them to study the finer details of the aircraft from all angles. Revolving stages from British Turntable are used by world renowned museums and heritage centres, exhibition contractors, TV and film companies, night clubs, pubs and other leisure venues as well as major car manufacturers world wide to create dramatic displays or effects, depending on the environment or application.
